During the Irish Section Conference 2017: What governs what we eat? (21 - 23 June 2017, Queen's University Belfast) student authors who presented an Orginal Communication (oral presentation or poster) were entered into a Student Competition.

On 22 June, during the Conference Dinner the following winners of the competition were announced:

OC13. Author Clara Heneghan who presented abstract entitled 'Effect of a blackberry-derived polyphenol enriched beverage on blood pressure: A randomised controlled crossover trial.'
OC27. Author Yvonne Leninghen who presented abstract entitled 'To investigate the effect of ALA and CLA on glucose tolerance and adipose tissue inflammation in the ApoE.3L.CETP transgenic mouse model.'
OC38. Author Eileen O’Brien who presented abstract entitled 'Low education predicts poor response to dietary intervention in pregnancy, regardless of neighbourhood affluence- secondary analysis form the ROLO randomised control trial.'
OC39. Author Ellen Flanagan who presented abstract entitled 'An examination of the determinants of low muscle mass and low muscle strength in older adults in Ireland.'


Following the Irish Section Conference, the Society hosted the annual Summer Conference 2017: Improving nutrition in metropolitan areas (10 - 12 July 2017, King's College London).  The programme included 16 original communication sessions.  Each session included student authors who also entered themselves into the Student Competition. 

On 11 July at the Conference Dinner at County Hall, London, the following winners of the competition were announced:

OC35.  Author Selina Cox, King's College London who presented abstract entitled 'Fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs) as triggers of functional gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a randomised, double-blind, lacebo-controlled, cross-over, re-challenge trial.'
OC84.  Author Katie Dalrymple, King's College London who presented abstract entitled 'Can obesity in early childhood be influenced by lifestyle interventions during pregnancy? A systematic review of the literature.'
