Association for Nutrition (AfN)
The Association for Nutrition (AfN) is the independent UK regulator for Registered Nutritionists and nutrition scientists, operating as a registered charity to protect and benefit the public. AfN holds and governs the United Kingdom Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), which is the professional register of competent, qualified nutritionists who meet AfN’s rigorously applied standards for scientifically sound, evidence-based nutrition and its use in practice. Those who hold current registration on the UKVRN use the titles Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) or Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr), signalling that they have at least degree-level nutrition science education and have also committed to following the AfN standards of ethics, conduct and performance. The register’s core purpose is to protect the public and assure the credibility of nutrition as a responsible profession, and it is the only register of nutritionist recognised by the UK Health Security Agency and the NHS, as well as by many other employers and professional organisations. The AfN defines and advances standards for evidence-based nutrition practice, accredits scientific nutrition degree programmes, and certifies training for the wider workforce to ensure competence and ethical conduct. Through setting training standards, overseeing fitness-to-practice processes, and engaging with policymakers and the media, AfN aims to improve public health by promoting safe, scientifically sound nutrition practice across the UK.
