REF 2021 Nominations Form
Introduction and guidance
The four UK HE funding bodies invite eligible bodies to nominate suitable individuals for additional appointments to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 expert sub-panels, to address specific gaps in expertise identified by the sub-panels. Please note there is no further call for membership of the main panels.
In 2017, the funding bodies appointed a proportion of the sub-panel membership, to ensure appropriate expertise for setting the criteria. At this point a proportion of members were also appointed who would join the sub-panels for the assessment phase. This current call for further nominations follows the sub-panels' analysis of HE institutions' submission intentions. This analysis has enabled the sub-panels to identify where additional appointments are required to ensure each has an appropriate breadth of expertise and volume of panel members necessary for the assessment phase.
Any association or organisation with a clear interest in the conduct, quality, funding or wider benefits of publicly funded research may make nominations to the REF panels, except for university mission groups, individual higher education institutions (HEIs) or groups within or subsidiaries of individual HEIs, who are not able to make nominations.
Guidance on the areas of expertise required for each of the sub-panels, details of the information required for each Applicant, and the criteria for appointment is available on the REF 2021 website. Information on the panels' structure, and the roles, responsibilities and workload of panel members is available in the Roles and recruitment of the expert panels (REF 2017/03).
There is no limit on the number of individuals that each body can nominate, however nominating bodies are requested to nominate only individuals to address panels' identified gaps.
