John F. Webster
Professor John F. Webster MA, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS, FAfN is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Bristol.
On arrival at Bristol in 1977 he established a unit for the study of animal behavior and welfare, now the largest such group in the world. He was a founder member of the Farm Animal Welfare Council and first propounded the ‘Five Freedoms’ which have gained international recognition as standards for defining the elements of good welfare in domestic animals.
He is a former President of the British Society for Animal Science and former member of the Animal Health and Welfare Panel of the European Food Safety Agency. He has been a member of Voiceless’ Scientific Animal Welfare Advisory Committee since 2009.
He has authored many books to do with animal welfare which include ‘Understanding the Diary Cow’, ‘Animal Welfare: A Cool Eye towards Eden’, and ‘Animal Welfare: Limping towards Eden’.
