Dr Taryn Smith is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Program in International and Community Nutrition, Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis. Dr Smith’s research interests include more fully understanding the effects of nutrition on health outcomes in population groups at risk of nutritional deficiencies, particularly infants, children, adolescents and pregnant women, and nutritional interventions and public health strategies targeted at these population groups to improve health and nutritional status and to avoid deficiencies. Dr Smith is currently researching thiamine deficiency and risk factors in infants in Lao PDR and developing a case definition of thiamine responsive disorders to help more accurately diagnose infantile thiamine deficiency disorders in resource-limited settings.
