This 60 minute webinar, by Dr Sarah Bath from the University of Surrey, will cover the role of iodine supplements, rather than diet, in meeting recommendations during pregnancy.

It is well known that adequate iodine intake is essential in pregnancy for correct brain development, but the role of iodine supplements is less clear. In some countries there are official recommendations for women to take iodine-containing supplements during pregnancy, but that is not the case in many countries (including in the UK).

What will I gain from watching this webinar?

This webinar will cover the variation in international policies on iodine supplementation and will review the current evidence base. Dr Bath will summarise the effects of iodine supplements on maternal and infant thyroid function, and child neurodevelopment, explaining the risks and benefits. Finally, the webinar will outline the gaps in knowledge and where future research is needed to underpin public-health policies on iodine supplementation in pregnancy.
