In May of 2002 the then President, Professor John Mathers, reported that Council had approved the appointment of five new ‘Theme Leaders’ to be elected by the membership to represent the new and developing areas relating to nutrition science. In his report Professor Mathers reported that the role of the Theme Leaders was to “lead visitors to interesting up-to-the-minute information relevant to that Theme, e.g. recent exciting publications, notices about meetings/workshops, new funding opportunities or relevant Government proposals. The bottom line is to encourage scientists and practitioners to consider joining the Society, to apply for membership of one of the Registers, to participate in our scientific meetings and/or to purchase our publications”.
As a result of the Council’s actions, and following the Annual General Meeting, the Theme Leaders were elected.
The current Theme Leaders are:
Food Chain, Animals and Plants - Dr Carol Wagstaff, University of Reading
Cellular and Molecular Nutrition - Dr Graham Burdge, University of Southampton
Nutrigenomics - Dr Liz Williams, The University of Sheffield
Nutritional Epidemiology & Public Health - Dr Basma Ellahi, University of Chester
Clinical Nutrition and Whole Body Metabolism - Professor Bruce Griffin, University of Surrey
International Nutrition - Dr Sophie Moore, MRC Keneba, The Gambia
Reproduction and Child Health - Dr Sarah McMullen, University of Nottingham
Sports and Exercise Nutrition - Dr Susan Shirreffs, Loughborough University

The Theme Leaders join the newly formed Scientific Development Committee, chaired by the Honorary Scientific Development Officer.
